Tales from the Magic Box
As he plops down in front of the television to watch Saturday morning cartoons, our nine-year-old hero is told by his mother that he may not watch any more television for the week. She encourages him to play with, in his mind, a bunch of "old-fashioned" toys he recently received for his birthday. He's forgotten how to use his imagination! Out of sheer desperation, he starts to leaf through a book of stories and acts some of them out with his toys. (The stories are "The Frog Prince" by the Brothers Grimm, "Anansi the Drummer" from the Afro-Caribbean tradition and the Japanese tale, "The Stonecutter.") In no time at all he is throwing himself into the fun, transforming the toys and himself and having a great time. K-6; approved by CAPS and Montgomery and Howard counties.
"Ritchie Porter’s performance of The Magic Box at our elementary school was a delight for all ages! I highly recommend The Magic Box to any school interested in promoting books, reading and dramatic storytelling."
